Namie Amuro was born on September 20 1977 in Okinawa (Japan). She started her career in the eurobeat group Super Monkey's in 1992. She quickly stood out as the most popular member and signed a solo deal with Avex Trax in 1995. She became a huge star selling millions of CDs (Chase the Chance, Don't Wanna Cry, You're my sunshine, A walk in the park and CAN YOU CELEBRATE? all sold over 1 million copies). She was then called "the queen of J-pop". In 1997, she shocked her fans by announcing she was pregnant, had married and stopped her career for one year. She did her last appearance on TV in December 1997. She came back in December 1998 with her hit I Have Never Seen. But her sales started to decline soon after. Her last big hit (back then) was NEVER END in 2000. In 2002, she took part in the R&B project entitled SUITE CHIC along with singers such as VERBAL and AI. She consequently decided to change her style, going towards the R&B route. In 2004-2005, her popularity started to rise again until her 7th album PLAY reached #1 in June 2007 (her latest #1 album was Genius 2000). In 2008, her single 60s70s80s also reached #1 (her latest #1 single was I Have Never Seen in December 1998). The release of her third best album definitely showed she has become as popular as she used to be as it sold over 1 million copies despite general low physical sales. In 2009, her following single and album both reached #1.
